The middle two figures describe the market, not us, and they are shown on purpose. Charging by the hour means the clock covers the walk from the van as well as the work, and on a block where the van parks at the far fence that is a poor deal for you. Pricing the job instead of the hour keeps the number you agreed and the number you pay the same one. It also means the walk in from the van is ours to plan, not yours to bankroll. Five estates here were laid out on Radburn principles between 1972 and 1989, which means the houses were designed back to front on purpose. On a Radburn layout the pedestrian reserves and shared greens between houses are common open space rather than part of a private yard, so a fault out there can sit outside your boundary entirely.
